My speech to HR attachees and interns:
As i practiced my speech facing the mirror, I begun 'karibuni wanafunzi( which is welcome students in Swahili). Then i began to reflect on when i was once a student... how i looked forward to no longer being one. And yet, here i was, staring at the mirror, talking to myself not as a master but humbled in thought and life as reality dawns on me that the student i am talking to, is none other than myself.
At a younger age i gave no cogniscance of the adage that learning is a never ending process. Somehow i still had hope that it would end and i would one day give a speech as a aficionado and not as a student. And yet... in this never ending HR exam, we only pass when we pass away.
I elucidate. As HR managers, we often are tasked with the role of teaching the youngsters be them attachees, interns or junior staff, and yet, we find ourselves schooled by them. These millenials bring in more knowledge than what we have to offer. Globally, as we suit up,organisation culture often changes to suit them nowadays. Dresscode is quite distinct as each adopts his/ her own sense of individuality.
Hairstyle no longer means a connotation to jamaica or whatever roots. The smoke as tradition had it, could actually be a message that the interviewee we see before us is an entrepreneur who doesnt conform to the norm and can bring in new ideas and concepts into the organisation.
If one is ever fortunate enough to face the interview panel considering ones promotion or appointment having previously been in the organisation, the interviewee should actually mask into the role of a teacher and teach the interviewers all there is to know about the questions asked. As this dissemination of knowledge is taking place, the interviewers are probably each asking themselves the same question
'What did i learn about the individual before us?'
So it is very vital that the interviewee, herein referred to as the teacher be as truthful as possible. For in truth, there is knowledge and not vice versa.
In this school of life; in this room it is not who is the best in tge room. The interviewer - student, iterviewee - teacher, both grouped references used interchangeably, is not supposed to ask questions formulated and designed to embarass the other. This is supposed to be a room where knowledge is exchanged but major should emanate from the teacher.
The student is mindful on what he can get from the teacher,if not now, in future. And the teacher very well knows that ego should not take over for he will one day return to being a student. As he looks forward to the future, the experienced can only look back reflect and imagine how lucky he is to be where he is.
We should all learn to appreciate where we currently are in life for there is always someone who would love to seat where you are right now. Sometimes that person may be someone who is closer than you think. So let not ego get tge best of you for you may be better but there is always someone who thinks you are the best or in the best place at that moment. Envious or egoistical we should place our selfishness aside and serve others in whatever capacity.
Whether or not we end up washing the feet of the one who will pocket 30 pieces of gold at your expense, you will significally impact the lives of so many others before then.
Hear now, no more of this!
Let us exercise humility in whatever position life puts us. Where you are is exactly where you are meant to be. It is what action you choose to take that will take you to the next moment.
The elite are probably conceptualizing Shrodinger's cat right now. The other possibilities will only know once they read. Mind you! Open or maintain status quo?
Your move. Your destiny.
