Speace!

By Fareed Omar

We write to create the past and pronounce to create the future, regardless, we act the present.

True? With each stroke of the pen it is already past. That is why it is easy to remember when we write things down.

Seldom do we write down prayers.  We believe that prayers are heard by Almighty. Christianity, in its teachings categorically states that believers need only ask and they shall receive. Islam, with one of the attributes of God as AS -SAMII (the listener), teaches through hadith that Allah is embarassed when a moomin raises up his hands, asks for something and brings them down before AS -SAMII answers and grants him/ her his prayer. Future reward is tantamount on the pronouncement of prayer. This is because when we pray, we are focused on the future.

Ying and yang circumventing the same circumference. Enunciations and incantations; Spells, evil as they are, are chanted in the form of words. Curses also only work when initiated through some form of pronounciation.

It is said that if you want to remember something then say it out loud.If you want to remember something short term write it. We tend toforget what exactly we wrote in an exam verbatim about fifteen minutes after the paper but we can remember what we say or if we want to remember it even better what we sing.

The harmony of words cannot go unsurpassed. I keenly listened to the priest bless his sheep and could not fail but motice that he had the same intonation when reciting the blessings. For muslims, I listened to the kids learning how to recite the quran at madrassa and cant help but notice that they too had some repetitive tune when reciting. Babies and parrots alike mimic the same words we say to them. But is it the words that they are echoing?Listen keenly, it is the tune that is registered. They will repeat the exact tune of the word said to them.

Teaching is one of the most noble professions existing. Teachers impart knowledge. My view is that they are the most dynamic fellows and ultimately end up in other professions. President Moi, President Kibaki for example, their  for  who put their teaching career on a hiatus to venture into politics. Both presidents loved teaching ( with the late president Kibaki finding love from the same profession); But is politics such a deviation from their initial calling?

After all, what is politics? Its all about teaching the citizens. With the leadership mantle at hand, politicians are able to stand at the forefront maybe not necessarily in class but with class, teaching ideologies and criticizing existing ones. All aimed  at improving relationships in the world and boosting the country's economy.

The citizens in turn, now well groomed, even if they start with other professions they somehow end up being teachers. Maybe not necessarily in a class but even in form of apprenticeship or mentoring.

Humans are designed to hear. In order communicate, to get followers, whatever your end game may be, you need to speak up. In order to remain in history, you need to write.

The human brain i believe comprehends and prioritizes speech before learning be it reading or performing anything. I reiterate, knowledge can only be imparted through sound. As far as i know, when the baby is in the womb, the ears are the first of the five sensory organs to form. And hearing is the last of the senses to leave when we die.

The baby while still at the womb is able to recognize the voices of the parents’ long before birth.

Some people believe that if we want our babies to become geniuses we should play classical music while they are in the womb. Some muslims believe the recitation of the Quran to the baby while in the womb will also have the same effect on mental superiority.

So the first stage of listening complete, onto the second stage, the learning stage. How can we evidence that we have learnt what we have heard. My answer is, by practice. I’ll explain it from a muslim perspective first. Islam for the muslims is a way of life. You would be amazed at how descriptive it is on how you should conduct and live your life. Praxis from how you wake up in the morning, how you conduct yourself during the day,(including governing what you should do when you see a thorn on the road), to particulars before going to bed.

Just so that your curiosity does not diminish your attention span, Islam dictates that a thorn on the road should you come across then you should remove it so that it does not harm someone else.  Other particulars hinted can be decoded by a Mufti. I am no such curate but I do know their is a 'dua' to be recited before .... sleeping. That much, among the little I know.

Many philosophers have also written on ways of life. My limited reading of Fredrick Nietzsche and Dostoevsky is just but a few that i can think of. Dostoevsky brings an enigma of hope if we would just practice an ethical mode of life with disregard to selfishness. To him its not about passion but compassion, no matter what the circumstance; His idea on onion ethics for example touches on the fact that we are all responsible for one another.  Superlative, all religions encourage peace. Islam has even adopted it among its definitions.

Leaders and readers (yes you right now), I beseech you to preach peace. The only true solution to this impasse is from advocating harmony and unity in the universe. Let us not sorry the teachings of some of the greats; Barack Obama,  Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa ... encouraging how they all saw a vision that coild only be achieved through peace and harmony.

Look at the impact that disagreements have. A war between Russia and Ukraine, we choose not to actively take part in it but the ramifications we certainly feel. All we can pray and hope for is that an armistance is found between the two countries and an amicable solution is found. Then, and only then can life resume normalcy. I reiterate, we may not actively take part in the war but we may actively take part in preaching and advocating for peace.

I wrote an article on how the universe speaks to us. I believe it still does so. Global warming is just but one of the tirade we choose to hear but not listen. Everything is somehow interconnected I believe. Who knows, perhaps earthquakes are also somehow interconnected to climate change. An earthquake of a magnitude of 7.8 and 7.5 hits Southeastern Turkey and Western Syria, and countries are not able to come to aid because of sanctions and/or lack of peace. The two (sanctions and lack of peace) can be consequently be interchangeably used.  All in all, we are our brother's keeper but we keep quiet as our brothers suffer. I ask you not to take sides, i ask you simply to aid.

You may not see it now but you are affected and will be affected by turning a blind eye, let not my heed fall on deaf ears. Natural calamities may not be avoided but you are probably who your brother needs. Dust yourself up for your brother has extended his hand from beneath the dust.

I write all this hoping one day, lack of peace, it will all be history. For now it may just as well be his story, what if tomorrow it is your story?
